    Filmsuggest.com

FilmSuggest is a movie recommendation site which suggests movies based on the ones that you have seen. If you’re looking for a movie which are similar to the ones that you’ve watched you can view FilmSuggest’s recommendations by rating a few movies that you have seen. If you are into alien and sci-fi movies, then you can expect highly rated recommendations similar to the movies that you have seen.

The service uses the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) to get the titles, genres, actors, directors, plots, and MPAA ratings. It uses Amazon’s database for DVD cover artwork and of course, a link to the store where you can make a purchase. The DVD / BluRay artwork may not always be present but the information about the movie such as actors and plots are available upon mouseover.

In your FilmSuggest profile, you can also add a wish list, show collection to friends (social networking feature is coming soon) and view most popular movies based on user ratings. You can prevent movies that you have already seen from appearing on the suggestions list by simply rating them and updating the suggestion list.

    Kickyoutube.com

Want to download videos from YouTube without installing a software, a plugin or going to another website just to paste the URL of the YouTube video? It’s quite easy. Simply give it a “kick”. Just add the word “kick” to the YouTube URL you want to download like so:

    http://www.kickyoutube.com/watch/?v=bFB4otnVYFU

Once you have inserted the kick, the KickYouTube app will activate and will appear above the YouTube page. It’s a very clever idea and very useful. It will save you time copying and pasting YouTube URL to another web app or desktop app. You can also select which format to use when you make the download. FLV, MP4, iPhone and PSP formats are supported.

Note: The service is having an outage when I tested it so you’ll have to excuse the screenshot.

    Introduction to stock market

Here you will understand what is a company's annual report and financial statements are about. You can read here how to take the financial statements of a company and carefully analyze them to determine what the stock is truly "worth". This allows you make better investing decisions by helping to avoid the costly mistake of purchasing a company when its share price is too high.

Eventually, by reading, printing, and studying these, you will be able to pick up a balance sheet and truly understand what the numbers mean.

In this first installment, we are going to look at why the stock market exists and explain how a business goes from being a small, family-owned company to a corporation with publicly traded stock.

    Financial Terms

Earnings per Share: The amount of profit to which each share is entitled.

Going Public: Slang for when a company is planning an IPO.

IPO: Short for Initial Public Offering. An IPO is when a company sells stock in itself for the first time.

Market Cap: The amount of money you would have to pay if you bought every share of stock in a company. (To calculate market cap, multiply the number of shares by the price per share.) Short for Market Capitalization.

Share: A share represents an investor's ownership in a "share" of the profits, losses, and assets of a company. It is created when a business carves itself into pieces and sells them to investors in exchange for cash.

Ticker Symbol: A short group of letters that represents a particular stock (e.g., "Coca Cola" is referred to as "KO".) Underwriter: The financial institution or investment bank that is doing all of the paperwork and orchestrating a company's IPO.

    Introduction

The stock market can be a great source of confusion for many people. The average person generally falls into one of two categories. The first believe investing is a form of gambling; they are certain that if you invest, you will more than likely end up losing your money. Often these fears are driven by the personal experiences of family members and friends who suffered similar fates or lived through the Great Depression. These feelings are not ground in facts and are the result of personal experience. Someone who believes along this line of thinking simply does not understand what the stock market is or why it exists.

The second category consists of those who know they should invest for the long-run, but don’t know where to begin. Many feel like investing is some sort of black-magic that only a few people hold the key to. More often than not, they leave their financial decisions up to professionals, and cannot tell you why they own a particular stock or mutual fund. Their investment style is blind faith or limited to “this stock is going up. We should buy it.” This group is in far more danger than the first. They invest like the masses and then wonder why their results are mediocre (or in some cases, devastating).

This lessons will prove that the average investor can evaluate the balance sheet of a company, and following a few relatively simple calculations, arrive at what they believe is the “real”, or intrinsic value of the company. This will allow a person to look at a stock and know that it is worth, for instance, $40 per share. This gives each investor the freedom to know when a security is undervalued, increasing their long-term returns substantially.

Before we examine how to value a company, it is important to understand the nature of businesses and the stock market. This is the cornerstone of learning to invest well.

Business is the cornerstone of every economy. Almost every large corporation started out as a small, mom-and-pop operation and through growth, became financial giants. Wal-Mart, Dell Computer, and McDonald’s had combined profits of $10.34 billion this year. Wal-Mart was originally a single-store business in Arkansas. Dell computer began with Michael Dell selling computers out of his college dorm room. McDonald’s was once a small restaurant no one had heard of. How did these small companies grow from tiny, hometown enterprises to three of the largest businesses in the American economy? They raised capital by selling stock in themselves.

When a company is growing, the biggest hurdle is often raising enough money to expand. Owners generally have two options to overcome this. They can either borrow the money from a bank or venture capitalist, or sell part of the business to investors and use the money to fund growth. Taking out a loan is common, and very useful – to a point. Banks will not always lend money to companies, and over-eager managers may try to borrow too much initially, wrecking the balance sheet. Factors such as these often provoke owners of small businesses to issue stock. In exchange for giving up a tiny fraction of control, they are given cash to expand the business. In addition to money that doesn’t have to be paid back, “going public” [as its called when a company sells stock in itself for the first time], gives the business managers and owners a new tool: instead of paying cash for an acquisition, they can use their own stock.

To better understand how issuing stock works, let’s look at a fictional company “ABC Furniture, Inc.”
After getting married, a young couple decided to start a business. It would allow them to work for themselves, as well as arrange their hours around their family. Both husband and wife have always had a strong interest in furniture, so they decide to open a store in their hometown. After borrowing money from the bank, they name their company “ABC Furniture” and go into business. The first few years, the company makes little profit because the earnings are plowed back into the store, buying additional inventory and adding onto the building to accommodate the increasing level of merchandise.

Ten years later, the business has grown rapidly. The couple has managed to pay off the company’s debt, and profits are over $500,000 per year. Convinced that ABC Furniture could do as well in several larger, neighboring cities, the couple decides they want to open two new branches. They research their options and find out it is going to cost over $4 million dollars to expand. Not wanting to borrow money and be strapped with interest payments again, they decide to sell stock in the company.

The company approaches an “underwriter”, such as Goldman Sachs or JP Morgan, who determines the value of the business. As mentioned before, ABC Furniture earns $500,000 after-tax profit each year. It also has a book value of $3 million [the value of the land, building, inventory, etc. subtracted by the company’s debt] The underwriter researches and discovers the average furniture stock is trading at 20 times earnings [a concept we will discuss more in-depth later].

What does this mean? Simply, you would multiply the earnings of $500,000 by 20. In ABC’s case, the answer is $10 million. Add book value, and you arrive at $13 million. This means, in the underwriter’s opinion, ABC Furniture, is worth thirteen million dollars.

Our young couple, now in their 30’s, must decide how much of the company they are willing to sell. Right now, they own 100% of the business. The more they sell, the more cash they’ll raise, but they will also be giving up a larger part of their ownership. As the company grows, that ownership will be worth more, so a wise entrepreneur would not sell more than he or she had to.

After discussing it, the couple decides to keep 60% of the company and sell the other 40% to the public as stock. [This means that they will keep $7.8 million worth of the business. Because they own a majority of the stock, they will still be in control of the store.] The other 40% they sold to the public is worth $5.2 million. The underwriters find investors who are willing to buy the stock, and give a check for $5.2 million to the couple.

Although they own less of the company, their stake will hopefully grow faster now that they have the means to expand rapidly. Using the money from their public offering, ABC Furniture successfully opens the two new stores and have $1.2 million in cash left over [remember it was going to cost $4 million for the new stores]. Business is even better in the new branches, which are in more populated cities. The two new stores both make around $800,000 a year in profit each, with the old store still making the same $500,000. Between the three stores, ABC now makes an annual profit of $2.1 million dollars. This is great news because, although they don’t have the freedom to simply close shop anymore, the business is now valued at $51 million dollars [multiply the new earnings of $2.1 million per year by 20 and add the book value of $9 million; there are three stores now, instead of one]. The couple’s 60% stake is worth $30.6 million dollars. With this example, it’s easy to see how small businesses seem to explode in value when they go public. The original owners of the company are, in a sense, wealthier overnight. Before, the amount they could take out of the business was limited to the profit. Now, they are free to sell their shares in the company at any time, raising cash quickly.

This process is the basis of Wall Street. The stock market is, at its core, a large auction where ownership in companies just like ABC Furniture is sold to the highest bidder each day. Because of human nature – the emotions of fear and greed – a company can sell for far more or less than its intrinsic value. The good investor’s job is to identify those companies that are selling below their true worth and buy as much as they can. Madonna

Ever since she first burst onto the music scene in the early eighties, there has been no stopping Madonna. It’s hard to believe that the Michigan native who moved to New York City with $35 and the dream of becoming a dancer would eventually become pop music royalty but that’s exactly how it happened. In 1983, Madonna’s self titled debut album made a huge splash with hits like “Borderline”, “Lucky Star” and “Holiday” but it was her appearance and overt sexuality that grabbed the public by the jugular.

The controversy would continue to grow as the sexual overtones in her music grew from the early days with hits like “Like a Virgin” into a hyper sexualized period in Madonna’s life when she released a photo book entitled simple Sex in 1992. The uproar was immediate, fundamentalists were on the job and the boycotts ensued - and so did the public fascination with the woman who no one could have ever expected would someday go on to write children’s books, much less have children of her own.

Did you know that Madonna is ranked in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful female artist of all time? It’s true, and along with that acclaim comes an estimated net worth of over $400 million. Not bad for a dancer from Michigan, huh? To further cement her place in history, the “Queen of Pop” was even inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in March of 2008, a well deserved honor to be sure.

With the amazing attention Madonna commands in the media it is no surprise that her concert appearances have been selling out for years, often well in advance of the shows themselves. Speaking of the shows – Madonna concerts are theatre at its highest form to say the least. By constantly evolving and even recreating the music that made her one of the most famous women in the world, Madonna’s is one concert you don’t want to miss. Huge sets, amazing visuals and some of the best live music you will ever hope to see come together to create a concert even you will never forget

Is it possible to get decent seats at a major concert anymore? How can you get tickets to see a mega star like Madonna without waiting in endless lines for hours? The answer is so simple you will wish you had known about it years ago – Impulse Tickets. Impulse is a one stop online shop for tickets to the hottest events from sports to concerts, even Broadway musical tours. Impulse Tickets treats you like a VIP, making sure that you get the hardest to find tickets and that you do so from the convenience of your own home.

Don’t even worry about getting dressed to go to the ticket windows of times gone by – you can do this in your underwear and no one will ever know! Heck, if you think about it, I’d bet Madonna would have it no other way.

    Microsoft Exchange Hosting

Multiple locations lead to a need for complicated infrastructures and an increase in potential breakdowns in the system. Bank Run

A bank run (also known as a run on the bank) occurs when a large number of bank customers withdraw their deposits because they believe the bank is, or might become, insolvent. As a bank run progresses, it generates its own momentum, in a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy: as more people withdraw their deposits, the likelihood of default increases, and this encourages further withdrawals. This can destabilize the bank to the point where it faces bankruptcy.
A banking panic or bank panic is a financial crisis that occurs when many banks suffer runs at the same time. A systemic banking crisis is one where all or almost all of the banking capital in a country is wiped out. The resulting chain of bankruptcies can cause a long economic recession. Much of the Great Depression's economic damage was caused directly by bank runs. The cost of cleaning up a systemic banking crisis can be huge, with fiscal costs averaging 13% of GDP and economic output losses averaging 20% of GDP for important crises from 1970 to 2007.
Several techniques can help to prevent bank runs. They include temporary suspension of withdrawals, the organization of central banks that act as a lender of last resort, the protection of deposit insurance systems such as the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and governmental bank regulation. These techniques do not always work: for example, even with deposit insurance, depositors may still be motivated by beliefs they may lack immediate access to deposits during a bank reorganization.

Yea, I'm one of those Apple freaks.

Okay, you guys know I'm a huge fan of Apple products, right? I suppose detractors (read PC die-hards) would call me a "fanboy." Well, maybe guilty as charged. But I think I've got good reason. Yes, I buy Apple products, I've been to multiple MacWorlds in San Francisco in January, and yes, I've been to the Keynote, where Steve Jobs comes out in jeans and black turtleneck and demonstrates new products.

iphone - Google Image SearchI remember a year ago January, walking out of the big room at the Moscone Center, and calling my wife on my soon-to-be-retired Blackberry announced that I was SO ordering an iPhone. Last year, I came out and told her I was SO ordering a MacBook Air (which I'm writing this on, by the way). You get the idea.

There are those who have problems with Apple service. I've heard and read about them. But I have to say, I really haven't had any trouble that I didn't bring on my self. A couple weeks ago, in fact, I was out of town on business and found that a small strip of the touchscreen on my first generation iPhone no longer registered any touches. Everything worked, as long as I didn't have to call anyone with a 7, 8 or 9 in their phone number. Problem.

Second problem was, in talking to Customer Care from the airport on the way back, I found that a repair would cost $199, since my phone (purchased on day 2 of release in 2007) was out of warranty. Ironically, $199 is the price of the new iPhone. Oh well, though I was perfectly happy with my first gen iPhone, and resisted the upgrade to the 3G phone when it came out recently, that meant I would HAVE to upgrade. Bummer :-)

But not so. When I made the appointment with the Mac Genius at the Chandler Apple Store, I found that even though the warrenty had expired, my Genius took care of me and reaching into the cabinet behind the bar, he took out a new iPhone and swapped it out.

    Uh...Great!

So, I guess I have to complain that Apple didn't live up to their promise, and actually replaced my defective iPhone at no cost, even though it was well out of warranty. Which robbed me of HAVING to upgrade to the 3G iPhone. Argggg!

    Michael Jackson is 50

This Friday, king of pop turned 50. Michael Jackson said in a telephone interview on Good Morning America on ABC that he planned to celebrate his birthday with his children, The AP reported. “I’ll just have a little cake with my children, and we’ll probably watch some cartoons,” Michael Jackson said.

The pop superstar, who has been divorced twice and has 3 children, also said he was trying to provide a normal life for his children. “I am letting them enjoy their childhood as much as possible,” he said, adding: “I let them go to the arcade and go to the movies and do things. I think that comes naturally. I want them to get to do things I didn’t get to do.”

    Death Race: Movie Review

A lot of gamers or probably mostly boys might remember Twisted Metal. Twisted Metal is a game in which players try to kill off each other inside a play area using their amped-up modified vehicles. Think of it as a demolition derby with rockets and explosives-galore. It was dark, gritty and hell, was it really violent. Upon seeing Death Race, this is what we saw and imagined; a Twisted Metal-esque movie. Honestly, we did not expect much due to this fact. But did it really live up to our low expectations and maybe even went beyond it?

The plot is really simple. It is 2012 and America had a recess with its economy. It became so bad that people committed crimes just to live through the day and the prisons became really crowded (they should see how our situation here in the Philippines look like). Prisons were then too costly for the government so private institutions bought them and maintained them for profit. This is where Death Race was created; a race in which prisoners compete using cars with weapons and if they get five wins and they get out of prison. It is streamed live on the internet and it gave huge bucks to the owner of the prison. Jason Statham's character, Jensen Ames, was setup by a masked man and was imprisoned for "killing" his wife. Now, he has replaced a dead racer, the famous Frankenstein, and only needs one win to get his freedom and daughter back.

Our verdict for Death Race? Well it's a mixed bag. Some people will surely like it and some will surely rant about it for ages. First for the positives is its very simplistic story and development. It's truly an action flick where plot goes and adrenaline takes the podium. The whole time we were really off our seats, especially during the races. Just take our word when we say it's rather cliche-ish and very predictable. For the negatives, well we believe it was violent. Really violent that some people will see it as disturbing (there's probabla a reason why it was rated as R-13 anyway). The acting to was really not that good also. We know Jason Statham could have done better as well as the other actors. The Death Race could be an exhilirating, death-defying ride or it could be the death of you.

    Can Google Chrome Beat Firefox?

After releasing their desktop application for Google services, the search engine giant just released another application in the form of a browser called Google Chrome. Ok, so by now you must have heard/read about it. It’s getting great reviews from the early testers/users and there are reports that Mozilla is already feeling the pressure.

I gave it a test drive and I must say that it is an excellent browser. It loads pages really fast and consumes less memory than Firefox. There is of course the issue of add-ons installed in my Firefox so the comparison regarding memory usage is not quite accurate.

The interface is great. The positioning of the tabs is very efficient. It gives you more space for reading which the other browsers didn’t take into account. This is great if you are browsing from small notebooks with wide screens. The tabs, menus and toolbars consume precious browsing space.

The start page is similar to Opera’s speed dial. The only difference is that it displays your most visited pages other than your personal bookmarks. There is also a quick bookmarking star similar to Firefox’s quick bookmark. I personally liked the feature that lets you drag the tab outside the browser to open it in a new window.

Chrome also comes in incognito mode. It’s a feature that allows you to browse privately. It will not save any information regarding your browsing if you use this feature. This is very useful if you are using another computer other than yours. Its own task manager is also a very useful tool which allows you to close a single misbehaving page instead of closing the whole browser.

The browser is still in its early stages but is already creating a lot of buzz and great responses from its users. Firefox still leads in customizability but given the proper support from third party developers, Chrome can definitely become a major player in the browser wars. Firefox’s enormous amount of add-ons and plugins still makes it number one in my book but I have to admit that Chrome is pretty cool and won’t mind having it around.
